Why Everyone Needs a Little Brother (or two)

Today, on a very rare occasion, I decided to take advantage of the splendid, chilly weather and go running.  *gasp*  Me?  Running?  hehe.  Like I said, it was a rare occasion.  After I pulled on my running shoes, I went out to ask which of my 8 siblings would want to accompany me.  Sadly, three of them were busy building a sheep-house, while the others were feasting on Mom's delicious taquitos.  None of them wanted to go tire themselves out with me.  (whaaat?)  None of them, that is, except my youngest, 5 1/2 year old, golden-haired, little brother.  We gasped, panted, and tried to convince each other that we didn't need to take a break as we raced down our country road.  As we neared the quarter-mile mark, his little tongue came out as he strained forward, always making me laugh.  To make a long story short, he made my running "trial" enjoyable, full of silly faces and giggles.

Afterwards, he decided to come with me as I went outside to be by myself and pray about what I should write in this blog post.  As I tried to be still and speak to God, he comes up and pokes me in the side saying, "I was praying.  I prayed about poking you!"  In the end, I decided to write about how awesome little brothers are.

Everyone needs a little brother.  (or two, or three, or more)

Just in case you didn't already know, little brothers never stop making silly faces (see above), trying to tickle you, poke you, scare you, and do everything they can to get your attention and love.  If you're being pulled down by the cares of the world, they show you the bright side of life by just being themselves.  They are always willing to play on the piano for you (which may sound more like banging on the piano) or take you out on one of their adventures.  Ultimately, they make the world brighter, funnier, and so much more fun.

Can you imagine having a quiet house?  A house void of any human laugh, cry, or speechI sure can't.  How dreary and lonesome it must be, hearing your own voice echo against the bare walls!  If you have little brothers, there is no need to fear a quiet home!  Their singing, music making, wrestling, screaming, banging, and thousands of other "little boy" sounds ring throughout every room.  Every. single. room.  I promise that if you have little brothers, there will be no lack of noise.  =)

When I cook, I am NEVER lacking a partner.  No way!  I always have an olive chopping, dough mixing, egg cracking, ingredient getting, little boy by my side, wearing a slightly too-large apron.  Instead of laboring by myself in the kitchen, I have an adorable helper who never stops chattering away while we work together.  It makes the task that much more enjoyable.  Aaaand we can both lick out the bowl and taste the results together.  ♥

Little brothers LOVE hugs (depending on their unique personalities, of course). ;) They need a hug in the morning after they wake up.  They need one after they fall off their bike and scrape their knees.  They need one while you curl up on the couch and read a book to them.  They need one before bedtime.  They need one in the middle of the night when they're scared.  If that's not enough, they also need some in between!  =)  Yes, there is NO lack of hugs in this house.

The list could go on and on.  There is always someone wanting to play checkers, have a tea party, sit on your lap, tell stories, go on a walk, play in the rain, catch lightning bugs, and paint a picture with you.  You'll never be lonely.  Little brothers are pretty amazing.  =)  I hope you think so too.

Psalm 133:1 "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!"

  1. I have one little brother. At age 12, he isn't so much of a hugger as he probably used to be... but he still brings life to the house. He has an incredible knack for making up jokes and puns on the spot or spurting out facts that he read once and memorized forever.

My favourite thing to do with him... hmmm, probably just sit and listen to some of his latest fascinations. He can find such excitement in "small" things. <3

    1. Very true Jordy! I have a brother close to that age as well. ;) They sure do bring life to the house! It's also a great opportunity to learn patience as we deal with all the noise, bustle, and overall rambunctiousness that they tend to bring. =) I know that I'm still gaining patience (and I can always use more). =)

Haha...they never stop talking sometimes. =) I think there's nothing you could do better for a little brother than just listening to them as they share their adventures and dreams. =) Sometimes it's hard to really care about their endless chatter, but when you take the time to listen it makes their day. AND it helps you to see them better as a real person with their own thoughts and desires. =)

    2. I especially agree with your last paragraph. "when you take the time to listen it makes their day. AND it helps you to see them better as a real person with their own thoughts and desires." I think you just hit it spot on!

    3. Thank you. ;) It can be hard to see siblings as people with their own struggles. Because we see their "bad sides," we forget to focus on their talents and abilities sometimes. I know that I need to work on this more...being more complementary and encouraging every single day. =)

  2. Haha, what a fun post! I agree with the first two things that little brothers do. :) The last two I wouldn't say mine do, but I'm sure some little brothers love hugs and helping. ;) Brothers are pretty fun though!!

    1. Haha...yes, I can't really see your little brother giving a lot of hugs Hannah. Sadly. =) But some of mine never stop giving them! Lol. It all depends on the personality. And yes, they are fun! ;)

    1. I have three little brothers as well, Emily! =) And yes, some of them definitely fit into one category and not the other. I have brothers who are huggers, talkers, and do-ers. =) You have to know their love language to make them smile. =) And little sisters are totally different. =) I have one who loves hugs and walks, one who loves spending time with her pets, and one who loves talking about books. =) hehe.

    1. Yes, sisters are a blessing too, Ashley! =) They also love hugs and being big helpers. ♥ I have a baby sister (well, she's 2, but she's still our baby) who is the cutest thing. She loves when we read books to her, take her on walks, and cuddle her in our arms. ♥ I'm sure you can relate. =)

Lol...yes, we are always eager to add more!! =) There can't be too many kids, right? ;) With every one, we wonder how life could have existed before them. =)

  7. Aww, I loved this post! I don't have a little brother, but I have several honorary older brothers and one younger sister. This was so fun to read, and I can actually relate with my little sister too.

    1. Yes Bethany! Little sisters definitely share some similarities. =) It's funny to see their differences too. My little brothers love being tough and "manly"...wrestling, feeding worms to our chickens, and spending their days making forts in the woods. My littlest sister would rather sit on your lap as you read her a story or have you paint her toenails...though she often tags along with the boys. =) But we just love them all. ♥

  8. This is SUCH a great post Hosanna...really touched on some things I'm dealing with right now. Pretty cool that God prompted you to post this! =)
I feel like I've been keeping to myself more and not hanging out with my little brother as much as I should; this is especially important to stop because I think his love language is quality time! But I believe God prompted you to post this to remind me how very important it is that I make my siblings a priority in my life! Thanks so much for posting this; you are such a blessing!!

    1. Awwww!! I love that, Ariel! ♥ Thank you so, so much. I can totally relate. This month has been full of busyness and school... and most of my limited free time doesn't go to my siblings. I need to work on that. =) It's especially hard to spend your precious time with the siblings who aren't quite as "fun" to hang out with. For instance, my baby sister is the cutest sibling anyone could ask for! She's always full of complements and joy. Thus, we are always surrounding her with hugs, kisses, and LOTS of love. It's a bit harder with little boys who might not want hugs... they want you to come see their new forts in the woods or feed the animals with them. ♥ Yes, it's definitely important to know their love languages! =)

      Praying for you!!
