Sharing a Piece of Life and His Grace

Dearest Friends,

If you're a thorough schedule-keeper (or stalker), you probably noticed that I skipped posting this week.  Or perhaps you're like me, and you accidentally let every blog post in your inbox be a pleasant surprise.  But, either way, I'm sorry for the late posting, and I hope this little message finds you rejoicing in Jesus.

Instead of a very long post (because it will probably end up being long anyway), let's share a bit of life.  How are you?  How has God been working in your life, and what stories of His grace are on your heart?

I have so many updates I could share... things I'm excited about.  Oh, but first, my story of His grace.

This summer has kept me busy writing.  In May, someone shared information about The Two Month Novel Challenge - writing and editing a novel in two months.  Crazy, huh?  I thought about it, prayed about it, and God opened the doors for me to participate!

Two months later, it's done:  The Torch Keepers.

Oh, but there's so much more to share.  I didn't write and edit a book.  I can say without a doubt that God created The Torch KeepersI was only the glove on His hands, the fingers He chose to use.

He gave me inspiration.  I woke up one day with an idea for a high-fantasy novel (not my typical genre).  God guided me through every detail.  Every twist was His idea.  The mistakes are mine (and they are there!), but He guided me through the entire process.  I'm just incredibly humbled.

This was a time I knew completely that it wasn't me doing the writing - it was Him.  I let go and let Him write.

One morning, I desperately needed to create backstory for my second main character, but I had absolutely nowhere to go.  As I ate breakfast, I remember begging God, "I need inspiration!  I need You to give me something!"

And He did.  He pushed me to read the first chapters of Genesis where I discovered my character's story.

And there were so many other moments.  When I was finally submitting The Torch Keepers to the contest, all completed, and realized that I had written the wrong synopsis.  They had different guidelines than the synopsis I had written... and so, at 9:00 at night, God allowed an awesome friend to pop online and help me through the "write a synopsis as fast as you can" process.  We stayed up, stressed, and laughed as God worked it out perfectly.

What I'm trying to say is this:  God is good, all the time.  He wants to be a part of your entire life.  Every aspect.  And when you give it to Him, He turns it into a masterpiece you could never imagine.  It's not up to me or you at all, and we don't even deserve it.  I guess it's called surrender.

So, I submitted my novel.  What's next?

A college capstone paper.  Creating a short film next week with some friends.  Oh, and lots more melon eating because our garden is overflowing.

It's busy.  It's stressful at times (not the melon part).  But He is so good, and I'm rejoicing.  If you haven't noticed "rejoice" is one of my new favorite words.

So let's share - what's going on in your life?  How has God been strong in your weaknesses?  How are you rejoicing?  I'd be delighted to share hearts together in the comments!

Let's be joyful together, because that's what Christians do.

(and don't worry - I'm going to have an official announcement for The Torch Keepers soon!  I'm so excited to share all the special details, but that's for another day, a later time.  BUT I can't wait!!!)

Today - right now - let's rejoice in Jesus.

My heart is overflowing with a good theme;
I recite my composition concerning the King;

My tongue is the pen of a ready writer.
- Psalm 45:1

  2. That’s so wonderful!! I can’t wait to hear more about The Torch Keepers!!

I just spent a week about other Christians at the FCC Family Conference, and it was such a time of praise and fellowship! The lectures were very edifying and getting to talk to old friends and meet new ones is so lovely. I have been praising God for safety with travels and how He has been working in people since I last saw them. :)

    1. That's lovely, Julian! I don't believe I've heard of that conference, but I'm so glad it was an encouragement to you! Friends and family are such a blessing; I'm sure that was such a sweet time to recharge and praise God together. =)

How has God been working through your writing recently, dear friend? ♥

  3. Hello! I've been following your delightful blog via WordPress for a few months now, but I don't think I've ever commented. This post was delightfully beautiful. I'm a writer, as well, and I just love it when God inspires different aspects and elements in your story! I remember one time about a year ago I felt that the Lord had placed it upon my heart to finish a story I had "dropped" for the time being because I just had too many other writing projects going on. Well, the Lord kept impressing this story upon my heart, so I finally prayed and asked Him, "Okay, Lord, if You want me to finish this story, I need You to give me an idea on where to take it next." And you know what? Less than two minutes later I had an idea. So, I knew I had to get to writing! And just a month and half later, the book was done!

Again, I really loved this post and it reminded me once again of God's faithfulness to me in my own writing. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hello! It's such a pleasure to meet you, sweet Bekah! *hugs*

Isn't God awesome?! It's such a huge blessing when He touches our lives like that. God Himself cares about YOUR story! He wrote it through your fingers... that type of love is pretty crazy. Some of the biggest challenges and rewards is surrendering ourselves completely to His plans. But He takes our mistakes and turns it into something beautiful. He is so good!

Thank you for sharing your story of His grace, Bekah! It was an encouragement for me to read today. I am so thankful for authors and writers who let Him create stories through their fingers. Becoming simply a glove on His hand. =)

Where has God continued to take your book? I'd be thrilled to read it one of these days or help if you are working on the final touches. Again, thank you for this sweet message. You are so very loved!

    2. Thank you so much for your sweet reply, Hosanna Emily! It is just so refreshing to me to see another Christian writer/author who is allowing God to have His way with her stories. I was so encouraged!

Thank you for asking about my book. This book I was talking about is my first book set for ages 16+. Previously I've published children's chapter books. For this book set for older ages, (the title is "A Promise Kept",) I'm getting ready to order proof copies once I get a cover made for it. After I make a few more corrections I'll be looking to get some advanced readers to review the book. Perhaps you might be interested in reading it then if you are available when I'm ready to send out the ARC's? If not, I totally understand, but I thought I'd offer since you asked. :)

Thank you again for your sweet response!

    4. Hello dear Bekah! Although a bit of time has passed since you left this sweet note, it's refreshing to hear about the stories God has placed in your heart. A Promise Kept sounds like a lovely book (and the name is beautiful!). I would be delighted to be an advanced reader if it worked out for our schedules! You can contact me through here or my "contact me" page if it's something you're still interested in when the time comes around. =)

Today in His Word I read about storing up our treasures in Heaven, and I encourage you to do the same - write for Jesus! Let Him flow through your every word. You're an encouragement, and I'm praying for you today, friend! ♥

  4. I can’t wait to hear more about The Torch Keepers!
Yes, we need to let Him work through us, through our hobbies and gifts, and through all we do. We can bring honor and glory to His name through a lot of different ways.

    1. Thank you, Sarah! I'm very eager to share about The Torch Keepers soon. =)

How has God been strong in your life recently, dear friend?

    2. Well then I’m looking forward to hearing more about it :D.

God remains strong always, I may not always feel His strength and on my own I feel weak.... but no matter how I may feel or be then He remains the same.
I just started school back on Monday and a lot of the questions from my history book are challenging and cause me to think.... the book was written from a Christian perspective so the writing and questions reflect that.
I’m not quite sure how to exactly answer your question to be honest... I haven’t seen God move in drastic ways recently, but I know that He’s still moving and He’s still with me. In the chaos of this life I want to chose to cling to Him as my anchor, trust Him to be my strength.
      What about you?

    3. Mm, I've been learning the same truths, Sarah. When we are weak, He is strong. That was so evident during our week of filming. I was nervous. I messed up. But He was so, so strong. ♥

Girl, no matter what's going on in life, He IS moving. It doesn't have to be drastic or big. Life is made up of small moments sometimes, and, if you're faithful then, just wait for those big things He will bring!

In history, praise Him. I'm striving to do the same with my English Capstone class. Sure, finding references and citations isn't fun. But let's rejoicing anyway. =) I love you, girl!

    4. Oh when I mentioned my history book and such I should have clarified. I love history and I love being challenged to think so I really do enjoy it. I like how the questions challenge me to think deeper on subjects that maybe I haven’t thought much about.
Very true, God is always moving. I’ve seen evidence of that in “small” ways in the past few weeks.

    5. Really? I like history too, Sarah! =) There are so many stories of His grace throughout history, and they remind me that right now He is writing the story of the world. We just need to trust. ♥

  6. Aw, I like this post. :) That is so cool how God inspired and kept you writing The Torch Keepers! Writing and editing a novel in two months sounds epic (and very intense, haha). I like how you give all the credit to God though. Truly He is the One who sustains every part of life!

I had a great experience of rejoicing last night - it had been a long and somewhat stressful day of work, but as I was driving home a song I hadn't heard before came on, and its main point was only just knowing God would be enough. That prompted me to readjust my focus, and it was so amazing - I went to sleep thinking of all the blessings of the day, rather than bemoaning my mistakes. It's amazing how the joy of God gives us life. xx

    1. Thank you, sweet friend. I needed to remember those truths today: Truly He is the One who sustains every part of life. Recently, I've been remembering the verse, "The joy of the Lord is our strength." It's so easy to live with our eyes cast downwards, never seeing the beauty of life He gives. But He sustains us. We just need to let go and let Him.

That is such a precious story of His grace! When we need Him most desperately, He is faithful. Sometimes life isn't as exciting as writing a novel in two months (haha), but He sustains us through the exciting and the mundane.

Thank you for the reminder. You are such a blessing, Jess! Keep rejoicing, girl. =)

  7. How exciting and precious... the way God has been present and involved in the mechanics of your everyday life. <3 And how exciting to hear about The Torch Keepers! I feel like I'm on the edge of my seat with anticipation for your official announcement. When will it be??

I'm looking at my computer clock and seeing that I have eight minutes before I need to head to work, and wondering what I can share in that time... I suppose it's worth mentioning that I spent a huge part of the morning formatting Isolated for print, and that I've been inquiring at various printers in Cambodia's capital to compare their services, quality, and prices. And that I've accepted a volunteer position working as the registrar at the Bible School in Japan which I've probably mentioned fifty or so times in our conversations. And I've been planning a course on self-publishing tailored for aspiring Cambodian authors... I do hope we can catch up properly at some point soon, because if you have as much to share as I do, it would be a full video chat! ;)

Anyways, I should get going now! I love you, dear friend. <3

    1. Your excitement is contagious, Jordy. =) Thank you so much for the encouragement and prayer and love you share. While chatting with you the other day, a verse came to mind that I feel you live out beautifully, "Godliness with contentment is great gain" (1 Timothy 6:6). I love your heart for Jesus.

I hope to reveal more about The Torch Keepers... perhaps next week would be soon enough? =) We shared tidbits about the story, but I'm eager to begin working on the sequel and see how God leads. He is faithful!

God has been working in your life in so many ways, Jordy. I love and am praying for you today! ♥

  8. God has been slowly putting the right pieces together. Yes, I see my life as a puzzle. I want to see the full picture; to be the full picture. but God has His ways. He does it slowly so I can embrace the sweetness of His grace and love in each fulfilling puzzle piece, placed at the right place. I can see it now. And my gratefulness and love for my Lord has never been as lovely.

    1. Victoria, that's a beautiful analogy! Our life is like a puzzle, confused at times and in disarray, but He will turn us into something beautiful if we let go and let Him live through us. It's not easy, but He is good. My friend, you are so loved!
